PAPER WRAPPING – THE ALTERNATIVE TO STRETCH FILM

Paper wrapping is a sustainable alternative to stretch film packaging. In this process, pallets or products are bundled or wrapped with paper instead of plastic film. The adhesive application using cold glue or hot melt adhesive ensures that the paper bonds securely. Using paper instead of stretch film can reduce the carbon footprint by up to 62%.

Paper wrapping is a recyclable form of packaging that replaces the use of plastic film.

PAPER PALLET WRAPPING WITH COLD GLUE

Paper pallet wrapping offers a sustainable alternative to stretch film. The pallet is wrapped in stretchable kraft paper, which stabilizes and protects the goods during transport. At the same time, the paper surface can be custom-printed, for example, with QR codes, logos, or shipping information. A cold glue swirl application securely attaches the paper web to the pallet and holds it together during depalletizing. This allows the recyclable wrap to be removed in one piece and sent for recycling.

COLD GLUE APPLICATION – A KEY TECHNOLOGY

Since paper, unlike stretch film, is not self-adhesive, cold glue performs this key function. During the first wrap of the pallet, a gripper holds the paper in place on the pallet. As soon as the first overlap occurs, the adhesive application begins and the gripper moves back. Cold glue swirls are then continuously applied to the lower section of the paper web. Before the final half-wrap, a swirl application is applied to the upper section to securely fix the end of the paper.

Bonding the paper layers allows the wrap to be sliced through with a single cut during depalletizing and removed as a single, continuous piece.

The cold glue swirl application to the lower section of the paper web bonds the overlapping layers of paper.

During paper pallet wrapping, the Polaris spray head continuously applies cold glue to the lower section of the paper web, while a second spray head applies glue only to the upper section at the end of the wrapping proces.

WHY IS A COLD GLUE SWIRL APPLICATION IDEAL?

Cold glue swirl application allows for a wide adhesive pattern with minimal adhesive consumption. Precise swirl application with a consistent application width also ensures reliable bonding and prevents adhesive from entering the machine or the surrounding area. This helps prevent unplanned downtime.

By supplying air, the Polaris spray head for dispersion adhesives creates the characteristic swirl application.

The use of cold glue enhances the recyclability of the paper wrapping: The water-soluble adhesive does not need to be separated from the waste paper fibers. In addition, cold glue is temperature-resistant, ensuring that the paper wrapping stays securely in place even at elevated transport or storage temperatures.

Depending on the product and shipping requirements, AntiSlip Gluing may also be a suitable method for securely stabilizing pallets without plastic film.

PAPER-BASED BANDING WITH HOT MELT ADHESIVE

Paper banding, also known as sleeve packaging, is a sustainable packaging solution in which products such as multipacks of bottles or other consumer goods are held together by a strong paper sleeve. The sleeve wraps around the products, keeping them securely bundled and stable throughout the supply chain.

Paper-based banding provides a recyclable solution for stabilizing multipacks of bottles or other consumer goods without plastic film.

Compared to plastic film, paper sleeves can significantly reduce the amount of plastic in secondary packaging and replace it with a fully recyclable solution. At the same time, paper sleeves offer additional space for messaging directly on the product.

To manufacture the sleeve, paper with high tensile strength and stiffness is cut to size. A hot melt bead is applied to the overlap. The glued sleeve is then slipped over the multipack.
