Hot melt is the general term for ?Thermoplastic Adhesives?.
Hot melts are solid at room temperature. For the application processes the temperature has to be elevated and it becomes fluidic. Upon cooling it solidifies again to form an immediate, strong and durable bond.
No change in the molecular structure takes place upon cooling. Melting process is reversible. The adhesive melts again upon reheating. Fluidic phase exists approx. 110 ? 190 °C.
The first EVA Hotmelts have been introduced 1945. The first applications and trials have been in done with bookbinding machines in USA.

a) Non-PSA
Hot melts which have a dry surface after cooling down respectively at room temperature are called ?Non-Pressure Sensitive Adhesive? or ?Non-PSA?.
b) PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesives)
Hot melts which have a sticky / tacky surface after cooling down respectively at room temperature are called ?Pressure Sensitive Adhesive? or ?PSA?.
Various hot melts such as EVA, CO-PA, CO-PE, APAO etc. are available.
